Road, is located on the unceded ancestral territory belonging to hereditar
y chiefs Robert Echaquan and Jean-Paul Echaquan. The site is a space for m
onitoring and protecting protected areas and for defending ancestral right
s, which necessarily requires consultation with hereditary chiefs before a
ny form of resource extraction.
In addition to maintaining continuo
us monitoring against illegal logging, the land defenders are building fac
ilities to welcome Atikamekw people living in nearby towns who wish to rec
onnect with their roots.
Some have left their communities to work in mu
nicipalities and now have limited access to ancestral Nehirowisiw Aski kno
wledge.
This place of transmission is open to all who wish to recon
nect with their language and identity.
